A SPACE: Verbal Identity for a Design Studio

Voice Direction

A Space is a New York–based studio working with elemental materials—stone, onyx, and mirror—through sculptural, architectural forms. I developed the studio’s original verbal identity, establishing tone, rhythm, and lexical sensibility.

The studio moves fluidly between art and design—rooted in a collaborative, cross-cultural practice that draws on sculpture, furniture, and ritual. My role was to define how the brand speaks about form, process, and place. The resulting tone system was precise, open, and materially grounded.

While the site has since evolved through additional hands, the language still carries the cadence and clarity of the original voice direction.

SLANTED

Inspired by the minimalist aesthetic of Donald Judd and the angular, interlocking planes of Hervé Baley’s furniture, Slanted Armchair No. 1 is a study in simplicity and materiality. Cut from a single sheet of Indian onyx, the chair’s sharp angles accentuate the beauty of the natural material and its cool tones of gray and green. Though straightforward at first glance, the architectural form plays with asymmetry to give the chair a slightly off-kilter effect. In some instances, the subtle asymmetries create new ways of interacting with and using the chair.
FRAGMENTED REFLECTIONS

With focus on water and earth as prominent elements, stone and mirrors come together as primary materials, creating a space for reflection and contemplation on change—both in nature, and in design. The mirrors are hand-crafted in New York using remnants from a local stone fabricator, bringing our focus to the idea of creation through transformation, as well as sustainability in design.
